Even if you're a cishetero white male with thick skin, LTT published a video to their own channel interviewing employees about what it's like to work there, and, even knowing that the video would be public and their bosses would see it, everyone was heavily negative about how overworked they are and how they have no time for retrospectives or fixing systemic issues. Linus is no longer CEO, and it's possible things have changed for the better, but as much as I truly love a lot of their writers (namely the Techlinked team), I wouldn't work for them even if recruited.

Are you forgetting that the second Terren took over they put all of LMG on a 1-2 week hiatus to address the concerns raised in the video (in conjunction with the GN exposé)? Don't get me wrong—I absolutely give LMG and Linus props for putting out that video, and it very well could be that things have gotten better since. That would be awesome. My point is still that I don't want to work there.

  14. There are actually a lot of legitimate reasons--even a "dumb TV" of a given resolution will typically be cheaper than the equivalent monitor. Off the top of my head, the relevant specs are refresh rate (I don't even think 90 Hz, let alone 120 Hz, is particularly common these days) and input latency. But furthermore if you've ever tried to debug issues directly on your set-top PC, it's really clear that something about the specs or settings makes them really unsuitable for productivity workloads where you're staring at giant walls of text.

  16. The problem with smart TVs is that when they stop being maintained, you're worse off than if you had nothing. I really like RokuOS--the UI is intuitive and mostly functional, and their sticks saved me from needing to sacrifice a precious Pi during the shortage. But already I'm dealing with issues in the Jellyfin app that were fixed two years ago that still haven't rolled out to the official "channel." With my dumb TV, I can swap out my Roku for a Pi no prob, since my TV "boots" straight into the last selected input when I turn it on. But with my Roku TVs, I'll have to navigate a menu to get into the correct input every time And that's even assuming that TCL/Roku doesn't up and push out a firmware update that literally bricks my TV to get me to buy a new one or pay a subscription.

  17. Jeff Geerling just did a video about a third-party internal storage upgrade for the Mac mini. I always figured that was impossible because they soldered the storage to the SOC—nope. It's a module. Looks like an M.2 until you get really close and realize the key is arbitrarily different. Apple went out of their way to reinvent M.2 just so users couldn't do their own upgrades.

  19. ​ @simplus1980 If any of these clients hosted sensitive data, there can be very strict rules about where your data can be "at rest" where the standard procedure of backing up data to your "offsite mobile cold storage" (magnetic tapes stored in the back seat of the sysadmin's car) simply won't fly. Oftentimes cloud buckets are the only acceptable data store. Still, I'd hope that clients under those restrictions at least sprung for cross-region duplication...

  25. For $50? Yeah, this would be fine. Burner Windows VM for one-time configuration, then CCTV viewer, as you say. But for $250?! Heck no. For that price you can get a used Android phone with a decent IP rating and a long USB cable. Then either partially submerge the phone or caulk around the USB port (the cable's insulation should be waterproof enough). On the phone itself, run a minimal install of Lineage and any of a number of free IP webcam apps. Done.

  26. Folks, help me out here--why does anything need to be hosted at all? Wouldn't Bluetooth / Zigbee work fine for remote start? Or LoRa-WAN if you needed the additional range? If I can turn my Xmas lights on and off from inside my house without needing to go through the company's server, why does my automaker need to "host" anything?

They can extract maximal context from a natural language proompt and can effectively synthesize a response (effectively: "how would the experts in my training data evaluate this code snippet?") much more efficiently than traditional search methods. ¹literally can't—those neural layers have been stripped out to focus on the "attention" mechanisms

It's a two-edged sword, though: while willful blindness is a poor defense, it's 100x worse to have data showing there's a problem and choosing not to address it than it is to merely suspect there's a problem but never actually measure it.

The full report has not been—and I guarantee will never be—released. Madison has been silent about the report, and if I were her, I would be too out of fear of litigation. Remember that she only came forward in the first place once current employees were talking about the toxic work environment. Am I saying I'd stake my life on her story being the truth? No. But from where I see it she had a lot more to lose by speaking out than she stood to gain.
