  1. For $50? Yeah, this would be fine. Burner Windows VM for one-time configuration, then CCTV viewer, as you say. But for $250?! Heck no. For that price you can get a used Android phone with a decent IP rating and a long USB cable. Then either partially submerge the phone or caulk around the USB port (the cable's insulation should be waterproof enough). On the phone itself, run a minimal install of Lineage and any of a number of free IP webcam apps. Done.

  3. A third?!? For that quality he could get a $50 5m endoscope. Mine was detected by Linux OOTB, no drivers or software required.

  4. Honestly, products from China are going to be the best bang for your buck. Plus, anything sold from the US, Japan or Europe (with the exception of Germany) will require you to create an online account and install their app. The trick with the Chinese listings is simply not to assume any of the specs or features are as advertised—read the reviews (not the ones that say "⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ can I have my gift card now?") and look for actual specs, datasheets and compatibility information.
