@kazzxtrismus idk, every time I hear about a new feature being adding to macOS or Windows I'm always shocked like, "Wait what? That's been standard in most Linux distros for decades." The two most jarring ones I can remember are Windows adding tabs to file explorer and macOS adding better support for tiling.

SteamOS (Holo) vs. Android is a great case study, because both are largely FOSS and designed for a specific purpose with optimizations for specific hardware. But whereas Google decided to reinvent the wheel and focus all open source development on AOSP, which they tightly controlled, Valve pumped money into existing community solutions like Wayland, WINE, dxvk and gamescope. I remember when Android hit the scene I was convinced that it would drive Linux adoption as people realized that there was life outside of Microsol. But outside of some extremely niche projects, doing Android things on a computer is either not possible or _just bad_. Meanwhile, I respond to 2-3 reddit posts a day from people who want the Steam Deck experience on their NUC or laptop and tell them, "Nono, put that HoloISO away and go download ChimeraOS which took all the best parts of SteamOS and put it in an operating system that will work for everyone."

History lesson: before there were Chromebooks there were netbooks that were heavily advertised and shipped with a lightweight version of Ubuntu. Netbooks ended up failing once Ultrabooks hit the scene, since out of small, slow and cheap, people were willing to sacrifice (3) if it took (2) along with it.

Especially since we have that already: it's called ChromeOS, and I would sooner install Windows 8. Actually I really liked the UI of Windows 8--very much had an Ubuntu Touch / Netbook Remix vibe.

@sergeykish It's usually not quite that simple, otherwise projects like anbox and Waydroid would be far more capable. Mcpelauncher works because the Android app itself is just a launcher for an inner Minecraft executable (a design decision I guess they carried over from Java), and even so, it's prone to frequent breakages, especially where online functionality is concerned.

That choice of 2004 was so sus. The year that Linux went mainstream was clearly 2006 when I adopted Linux (Dapper Drake represent!)
