I unsubscribed from the LTT main channel after the waterblock thing and from everything featuring Linus after their response to GN. The two channels I still watched were GameLinked and TechLinked, not just for Jeff Geerling's son, but more for Jakob and Jessica, the two best writers they ever had. Had. Because they were laid off (along with Horst of MacAddress) a week after Linus talked on the WAN show about how LMG was doing record numbers. Linus is a garbage human being, and that whole company is a rotting fish. They can't fall into irrelevance soon enough.

As my kid has been getting older and more independent, I'm tempted to try streaming. OBS has been working great (under COSMIC and Wayland!) for desktop recording, but I wonder how much lack of global hotkeys will make managing streamer-y things a nightmare. I guess I could ask Brodie!

He's egotistical, entitled and vindictive and immoral. He nearly ruined a startup by testing their waterblock on an incompatible GPU, complaining about how it didn't work, and then, when confronted, refused to retest or retract the video. He's a toxic boss who created a company with a toxic burnout culture, and while no allegations against him have ever stuck, there sure are a lot of "misunderstandings" between him and women in tech. He didn't lift a finger to out Honey (after being their #1 spokesperson), but he sure did make sure to warn all of his personal creator friends. Meanwhile, he's gone after GN and other outlets that have criticized him, claiming that their testing is inferior while his own videos are riddled with errors. Also: did you miss the part about firing his best staff after bragging about profits?

lol, so untrue. When I started on Linux back in '06, the number of GNOME games installed by default in Ubuntu sure beat the three that came with XP. And I know enough of the early history of computing to know how floppies and punch cards of the earliest games got circulated amongst UNIX mainframes.

They don't even have Emily Young anymore. My guess is that the person at the company with the most knowledge of desktop Linux at this point is Luke Lafalfa.

I'm far from being a normie—my Year of the Linux Desktop was 2006—but I feel like this might be a GNOME/Ubuntu issue. elementaryOS 8 worked out-of-the box on my last two (albeit all-AMD) installs (with Wayland working even better than X11), and I've done a lot of DE hopping on my Arch machine (also all-AMD) with zero issues like what you're describing, even when it comes to advanced stuff like virtualization or the ROCm stack.

@AstoundingAmelia Literally said on the WAN show that he warned his friends and then proceeded to say that he didn't make a more public statement because there were other videos (from channels with 2k followers) about it at the time. So talking out of both sides of his mouth: "Everybody was already aware that they were doing this," on the one hand and "but I made sure my buddies were safe" on the other. I also didn't mention the waterblock auction because that seemed like a legitimate mistake. Everything leading up to that, though—especially the "it's not a review, just entertainment" (that will ruin this company's whole reputation) response—is valid to criticise.

Is the UHD situation really that bad? I haven't used Intel graphics—integrated or otherwise—in about seven years, but my understanding was that the mesa drivers were as mature as their AMD counterparts, if not moreso.

@ethanepperson-jones9952 Frfr, it's honestly boring how well AMD dGPUs and iGPUs work on Linux. I had to do a little bit of fiddling once upon a time with a 6800U to unlock RyzenAdj, but I think when I last reinstalled the system the proper driver was baked into the kernel.

Here's why Linus' video is making my neckbeard itch—he's setting people up for thinking Linux = SteamOS, with all the limitations of that desktop, the same way Linux became synonymous with Ubuntu's netbook spins in the early 2010s. Now, a lot of those netbooks were great for what they were designed to do! But when people realized that 16GB of storage and a single Atom processor was not going to be enough to replace their computing needs, Linux earned a sour reputation by association that lasted a full decade.

I know elementary is a polarizing distro for a bunch of reasons, but I have to ask: why isn't every distro doing that? ¹you're actually given the choice on first startup whether or not to enable this, along with whether to delete files older than 30 days from your downloads and trash

@kleddo3126 What 99% of people want is atomic distros where you can roll back system settings to a last good state. You can technically do that with any distro by just installing Timeshift, but Silverblue and Vanilla should be more frequently recommended.

@arturpaivads That's what they said about netbooks and ChromeOS too. All that happens is you end up with eWaste at the end of the day when people don't realize they can do more with their hardware.

@tablettablete186 I hear what you're saying, but to me these seem like signs of how far Ubuntu has fallen—I would never recommend Ubuntu to a newbie, but I would recommend in a heartbeat any of the de-snapified derivatives that don't run GNOME and have flatpak OOTB.

I can't play Switch games on a PS5, therefore the Nintendo Switch isn't viable. When you can buy an SFFPC for $500, throw Linux on it, stick it under the TV, and run 95% of your Steam games, 90% of console games through emulation and 75% of other PC games through Bottles or Lutris...
