Fwiw, Brodie, I do find COSMIC daily-driveable and am finding fewer and fewer reasons I need to hop over to my X11 fallback. I happen to really like the design language and find COSMIC's UX to be extremely intuitive (as someone who never found a good multi-monitor tiling flow with sway or Hyprland). Anyway, I should hope Vaxry isn't madly in love with COSMIC—if he were, what would motivate him to continue to work on Hyprland?—but writing a whole blog post to 💩 on the project is just weird. At the end of the day, it's a free internet, and the Wayland ecosystem is net-net better off with Vaxry doing his own thing in his own corner, so I wish him the best.

Vaxry's "normies don't care about tiling" line reeks of gatekeeping, and it's also patently false. I love tiling, but I don't know enough about what I love about it to properly write a good config for every system (Hyprland on the Steam Deck is 🐐ed, but I never got a good flow on a desktop). tl;dr—there's a clear niche for an opinionated tiler, and System76 is filling it.

It's partially a reaction to the Rust fanbois—who, in my experience, are an entirely separate group from the folks who are actually proficient in Rust. It's a case of the 5% most obnoxious members of a group arguing with another group and not realizing that the only people arguing back are the 5% of that group.

Oh yeah? Well??? I really like your pfp! Did you draw it yourself? I hope you're having a lovely weekend! So there!

@ImperiumLibertas "a certain level of quality within a group?" Were talking about users of personal desktops, not some kind of trade association.

I do think we should cut him some slack and remember that this was his personal (if public) blog. He wasn't jumping into System76's forums or writing an editorial for The Register. Vaxry is someone to expends a lot of energy into areas that I don't think are productive. But it's his energy to expend.

@BrodieRobertson Ah, okay. I didn't realize that. Thanks.

Compare with the large number of people clamoring for Valve to release SteamOS for generic hardware when ChimeraOS already exists it's clear that that OS was designed for one particular class of device. People really seem to gravitate towards software made mindfully by hardware makers (see also: Hackintoshes).
