A big project should never have only one owner, though. GH is really good about managing repo rights, where there's a really good slope from "trusted contributor" all the way to "admin."

The contributors in this story all had a history of good contributions. It's also easy enough to look at someone's GH profile and make sure they have an established history. The risk of a project rotting due to lack of / high friction for code contributions is realistically much higher than the risk of someone being malicious.

I authored a bunch of "inner sourced" packages during my seven years at my last employer. I was extremely generous about giving commit rights to anyone who wanted it and made sure that every major project had at least one other admin besides me. Anyway, I'm no longer with that employer, and I still occasionally get messages from ex-coworkers who are continuing to use those projects. Gone but not forgotten is about the happiest ending anyone can hope for in this world.
