It would be cool if there were casual users doing The Linux Challenge. Like, imagine System76 mailing out fully loaded Thelio desktops to a bunch of content creators and streaming influencers. That would be huge.

That's why Proton was a gamechanger—it flipped the script! Notoriously for Unity games, I find the Windows versions run better than the native Linux builds these days.

This. When I got a Windows laptop for work, I spent more time in the terminal tweaking things and getting software running than I did outside. And it took me far more time and frustration than to set up my next work computer—a completely blank Framework that I loaded with elementaryOS.

@gimcrack555 I switched in 2006, right when Vista was coming out. I didn't switch because of Vista—I actually rather liked the OS when it was running on appropriate hardware—but I really thought there'd be more people joining me, especially given how great Dapper Drake was for Baby's First Linux.

This 1000%. Especially since every Ubuntu Debian derivative can be turned into any other by just editing the repo lists and running a few (unsafe) commands. Especially when comparing distros that don't use snap, "mint vs. pop vs. elementary vs. zorin vs..." is the spiderman-pointing meme.

Hardware incompatibility is much less of a thing these days, with every webcam and mic I've seen being recognized OOTB with standard drivers. In terms of specialty hardware, if it's got a large community, somone will have made a package to use it in Linux (I was surprised to learn today this includes the Elgato Stream Deck!). The only things I've had issues with in recent years are fingerprint sensors (as @manitoba-op4jx said) and extremely niche RGB (OpenRGB works for the rest).

These videos are only going to become more common over the next year as that Oct 14, 2025 Win10 EOL approaches. People really hate Windows 11 to a degree I haven't seen since Vista (which was when we had the first "year(s) of the Linux Desktop"), and Microsol is doing all they can to make sure that even people who'd be willing to bite the bullet can't upgrade their old machines.

@cameronbosch1213 I'm a happy Kdenlive user. My needs are low—and I'm happy to bust open Tenacity and GIMP rather than insist that my compositor does everything perfectly—so Kdenlive qualities as "feature complete" for me. I ask myself sometimes if I should try Resolve given how people rave about it, but FOSS is actually a really big selling point for me to ensure that if the developers turn evil, I'll be able to continue on a fork (see: Tenacity).

Command-line is just more efficient. If there's a piece of software I want, I could: 1. Select AppCenter from the launcher 2. Wait for it to verify its network connection and load 3. Enter the software name in the search bar 4. Figure out which listing is actually what I want (because SEO is affecting Linux app stores now??) 5. Click "Install" 6. Watch a spinner spin 7. Open the app Or I could open a terminal and type $ flatpak install vlc (don't even need the full identifier any more!), and with, like, three additional keystrokes I have it running on my system.

The problem is that SteamOS is optimized for one particular piece of hardware and one particular usecase—gaming. It's a 🐶 💩 choice of OS for software development, 3D design, AV editing or general productivity. And it's going to run like 🐶 💩 on any hardware that's not an APU codenamed after a FFVII character.

@curious-pixelz Only if you break immutability or set up Nix. Trust me—I tried to make the Steam Deck my daily driver, but it's so much more difficult than it's worth.

@JR-uy2nd Some, but not all. Take Brodie, Louis Rossmann or anyone else who just provides commentary on current events. OBS for recording and a compositing editor like Kdenlive will meet their needs. And OBS + the community Stream Deck UI means that Linux is viable for streamers.

@jarod1701 I know you said "most" users, but the continued existence of the Mac Studios and Mac Pros suggests the market segment very much exists.
