  1. I use Cosmic purely as a tiling WM. I decided to try enabling it when Alpha 2 came out, and I 💯 see the appeal. Bottom line: it's a toggle—turn it on or don't.

  2. I upgraded the second the release hit the Arch repos. The new settings are nice. Not being able to launch apps from the Super menu is not. 😂

  3. Isn't the solution just to gamescope all the things? I just figured out why Steam performance is pants on COSMIC for me—something is going horribly wrong, and the games think they're running on an 8k display (it's 1440p)—so I expect that once I get SteamTinkerLauncher set up, that'll be the last nail in the coffin for my X11 fallback.

  5. The dealbreaker for me is that the "compress" options only include zip and tgz. No xz? Back to file-roller for me.

  6.  @somenameidk5278  Yes. Look at any compression benchmark—LZMA has the best compression ratios across the board. Gzip is still the speed champ (IIRC), but if I'm bunding up an installation of something to stick into cold storage, I'm going xz almost every time.

Taking the time to set up a good display manager has been totally worth it for me in terms of being able to trial different DEs / WMs. Finding one that works with all your sessions can be tough (ly didn't work for Pantheon; LightDM is hot garbage didn't support COSMIC), but SDDM seems to work with pretty much anything.
