Star Trek provides an excellent example of the importance of downtime. I strongly believe that the primary reason why people who loved Deep Space Nine and hated Discovery feel that way was because the streaming-era 13-eps/season production didn't have room for "filler" stories that gave the propagonists enforced downtime, even in the middle of galaxy-spanning crises: your "Take Me Out to the Holosuite," "It's Only a Paper Moon" or even "Move Along Home."

@epsilonlambdaomega1zero SNW is definitely trying to give us more classic, episodic Trek, but I'm going to be peeved if S03 ends without giving us an Ortegas-focused episode.

@RealityOverwritten "Magic" and "Lethe" before it were a wonderful bottle episodes that dramatically built on the show's characters. Season 1 was also the longest of the bunch at 15 episodes.

I think the phenomenon in modern writing has been dubbed a part of "Whedoning," due to it rising to prominence with the Avengers films. But it's ironic, since Firefly was really tasteful about it.
