I find that there are some few series with really bad timey wimey inconsistencies that can be explained through chaos theory and stable attractors—basically, small perturbations off of stable time loops are, by definition, inconsequential. But a really big push at just the right point could knock a timeline onto a different stable attractor (AU). This system also allows for "period 2" temporal orbits (mirror universe characters sacrifice themselves to save the "better" timeline) as well as fully chaotic temporal mechanics, where the characters just do whatever because the timeline is f**ed anyway (Futurama, taken as a whole, may fall into this bucket. Star Trek's temporal cold war *definitely works this way).

Star Trek's temporal cold war.

Star Trek: Enterprise "E²" used this structure. As did Star Trek: Discovery's second season.
