Oh God. I swear there's a show that does this. The only way for the character to break out of the loop was to just sit back and let all the bad things happen inside their pocket universe. I remember it being really heart-wrenching, and I wish I could remember which show it was from. Edit: It was Dollhouse.

As a Steins;Gate fan, I feel you.

I would love to sit down with Red and the Steins;Gate DVDs and just have her running commentary just relentlessly mocking the show all the way through Episode 12...

I got my PhD in nonlinear dynamics, so I've always loved the trope of time loops and explicitly the challenge of breaking out of them. There's a methodology called Lyapunov analysis where the idea is that how stable a loop is will vary depending on where you are on that loop and in what direction you push. Which aligns really well with the fictional trope of there being one specific change that will alter your timeline and get you out past Groundhog Day / push you out of the dark future attractor / push you into the basin of Steins;Gate.

I'm in the process right now of watching Steins;Gate 0, which is so good yet so painful to watch. I'm glad they made it and fully explored the severe PTSD and emotional trauma someone who had gone through that number of loops would suffer from, but I'm equally glad that I didn't follow the online community's advice about switching to S;G0 after Episode 23, because the only thing that's keeping me going is knowing that it ends with a happy ending (with Load Region of Déjà Vu now being considered canon).
