Standing ducking ovation, Angela. So incredibly important. So incredibly well put. And anyone who was "turned off" by the back half of this video should really ask themselves why they feel angry watching an intelligent woman who grew up in a Red state share objective historical facts.

You'd think we'd have learned our lesson after the "my dark matter video was a failure" video.

This reminds me about how, moreso than any other group, teachers get brutally vilified when they go on strike.

That's good historical context, but the "working in mills" of 2024 is "working in Silicon Fabs." That is, our economy today depends on highly skilled, qualified labor. My example wasn't pulled out of the aether—something you'll notice is that companies like Intel, TSMC is that they chased the promise of tax breaks out to Red states like Arizona, and now they're complaining they can't find enough qualified employees to build—let alone staff—those facilities. And, as Angela said, good luck recruiting people to move to states where they wouldn't have bodily autonomy. My point: if "conservatives" really cared about strengthening the economy instead of picking divisive "culture wars," they would be competing with Progressives to fund schools.

@Pingviinimursu Real answer: I'm breaking in the FUTO keyboard as a replacement for Swiftkey, and the autocorrection was too amusing to undo.

Ask yourself why you had the reaction that you did. Sit with it for a bit.

@simedinson984 Great! Does what it's supposed to, with a much cleaner interface.

Yeah. I use to slightly thicker gauge to snake my trumpet¹. And another commenter pointed out that they were originally used to clean the tobacco kind. ¹I hear how that sounds—I can't think of a better way of phrasing it, sorry.

I love how she hits this point precisely on the head around the mid-point of the video. "STEAM" is a branding term that effectively makes no difference—if you went to an affluent school system (like I was privileged enough to), then you learned critical thinking and the scientific method under a different name. And if you grew up on the other side of the county divide? Well, you were probably just as underserved as the schmucks who attend your school today.

Remember that even Star Trek had a pretty dystopian 20th/21st century (depending on the current state of the temporal war). See: Sanctuary Districts, Eugenics Wars, nuclear World War III, the genocide by Col. Green.

It's the manifestation of Goodhart's Law—every metric that someone uses as a goalpost will be gamed or otherwise abused. Good teachers were penalized for teaching smart kids (who had the smallest chance for "improvement"), struggling schools were defunded and replaced with for-profit charter schools and every teacher in the country was forced to care more about test scores than their students' learning or, oftentimes, mental well-being.

It's got more wrinkles than a prune in August.
