@petevenuti7355 Yeah, it's pretty insidious. I can't remember if it was John Oliver, Hasan Minhaj or Rebecca Watson who did a breakdown on "we only cover the brand name" medication—IIRC it's a deal between the pharmaceutical companies and the insurance providers.

I'm not an expert, but does the government actually pay $1 for $1 in SNAP? It's possible to get a lot of store gift cards on sale because breakage is factored into their value. I would have assumed (hoped?) that governments only pay for the SNAP dollars that are actually spent.

It's amazing how male YouTubers don't feel the need to use those disclaimers. Citation: I am a male, making broad claims about YouTubers, with a levels of confidence not at all backed up by my actual level of expertise. 🤦♂️

See, this is why people 💩 on economists—because they see the headline "Gifts are inefficient and a waste of money" and think, "Economists have no understanding of human psychology, it's the thought that counts, stupid!" And at no point do they read the full paper (or watch your full video) and see that: - yes, the study accounted for sentimental attachment - no, economists are not saying that the diamond stabber your grandmother gave you on her deathbed was a bad gift - that the actual argument (good gift = high mental effort; holiday season exact too high a mental toll on the average gift-giver) is something much more insightful!

This is so dumb. Who would throw out a 2lb bag of brown rice?? That is literally the perfect gift!

Like any good (econo)physicist, she used some shorthand and threw out negligible terms. The inequality is properly: v_percieved > v_actual With all terms existing on both sides and the fundamental issue being that the age of internet has effectively zeroed out the terms on the LHS—how many times have you received a garbage gift and thought, "Come on, dad, how hard would it have been to pull up my Pinterest board and then order something from Amazon?" Yet the RHS terms—the actual mental effort of acquiring the gifts, hasn't actually gone down because of how much more difficult it is to find items that are truly novel to the recipient.

@Sonny_McMacsson they edited their original comment. Looks like I should delete mine. Thanks for the heads up!

And one of them performed on the opening credits for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Oh jeez—I just started a new job, and there's a holiday potluck this coming Friday. I am so nervous about it already.
