I don't know that we know for sure about whether or not the grand mufti of Jerusalem was the one to convince Hitler in the first place, but it was true that extermination was not Hitler's original plan. It's also true that the grand mufti did at the very least, meet with Hitler and encourage the continued extermination of the Jews because he didn't want them to come to Palestine. Just because Hitler original plan was to expel the Jews rather than exterminate them, doesn't make him less of a genocidal anti-Semite (because he eventually did decide to exterminate the Jews).
