Einstein one said: "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity." Einstein died in 1955 but Brexit etc has shown that not much has changed since then.

When I listen to some of these Tory contenders it makes me question their sanity, but then I wonder if they are merely tuning in to the same wavelength as the Tory public. Is this the deplorable state to which we as a society have descended?

How far can the Tories push the boundaries of insanity?

The greatest threat to democracy is the increasing wealth inequality that we see right across the western world as increasing amounts are drained out of the active economies into the assets of the wealthy. The economies shrink and asset prices surge. I would like to see the assets based in the UK that are owned by a resident of a tax haven taxed and similarly for any assets where ownership cannot be determined.

A really poor start by Labour and we have to wait for Reeves at the end of next month before we get any insight into what might be ahead. We desperately needed Labour to be bold and transformative but I get the distinct impression that they have been nobbled by wealthy influencers.

Quite insane! We seem to get an increasing amount of lies and misinformation from politicians. Are they on something, are they corrupt, are they working against our national interest? Perhaps this is what neoliberalism delivers.

I agree that this is a real problem. This is part of the transition taking place right across the western world, including the UK, facilitated by the rise of populism where governments shift their focus away from public best interest and towards that of the of super rich oligarchs. In this, the public become just another resource to be manipulated to fuel the needs of this super rich group.

I agree with all of this and likewise expect far more. We have our own sovereign money and could easily use it for investment in much the same way that the US has done to ramp up growth, and everything that follows from that. We achieved far more after the WW2 with a far worse economic position. In reality I know that Starmer won't do it and will fail like those before him.

Labour have the ideal opportunity to be transformative with their massive Parliamentary majority. There is urgent work to be done, the chance won't come again yet they are throwing it away. Our surging wealth inequality is economically damaging. It is an obvious one yet Rachel Reeves has so far failed to acknowledge or address it. The problem with the wealthy is that they are incapable of spending enough. They always have a surplus above their spending needs that they invest. That tends to be into assets such as property, shares etc and over time as more and more money is chasing these assets, their price increases. The other side of this is that increasing amounts are being withdrawn from the active economy of jobs, business and services into asset purchases. It is an increasing drain on the active economy and it becomes increasingly difficult to achieve growth there. Nearly all of the growth that we see is in asset prices. That in turn has another detrimental effect on the active economy because as asset prices rise, their use within the active economy also becomes more expensive, most notably in the cost of rents. The solution is to reduce this drain on the active economy so that it is manageable. That can only be done through taxation.

I suspect that Starmer has already been turned by the wealthy in the UK. It's now all about holding on to power even if that means a continuation of Tory austerity. It has been said time and time again that power corrupts and I sense that it is true.

This should be a wake up call to the UK and probably the rest of the world. We are becoming increasingly reliant on the US right across the board from commerce to defence and beyond. Isn't it time to react now before we really get screwed?

The government now needs to carry out its obligations as specified in its Labour Manifesto. Musk's donation to Reform is not a justification to overturn this.

Likewise, I fear for the UK and the world at large. Farage has seen how social media misinformation has helped Trump win his election. Once Farage has obtained shed loads of money he undoubtedly do much the same. He already knows that it is possible to get people to vote against their own best interests.

The ERG members including Cameron, Johnson and co should now be out there grafting for the UK to make up for the 5% of GDP that they lost. Presumably Johnson will donate the royalties from his new book back to UK government.

Nice if it happens but I am not convinced that it will.

@Demun1649 There are lots of quotes that Einstein made and many debatable ones. The one that I quoted was made to and reported by Fritz Perls.

From what I can see Starmer is devoid of any vision. He is a waster who has only accepted the role of PM for his own pointless self interest. With his power grab he has left a vacuum as head of state that will inhibit this country's progress for the next 4 years.

@Wiggle65 I can't say that I am impressed either at the moment but I do think that this Tory pair, if in government, could take us into a whole new level of austerity and decline. Although, they are probably great for the super affluent. Are you in their beneficial wealthy category?

Having an individual as a national leader might have worked in medieval times but not today. Time and time again we have seen and continue to see that it doesn't work and is dangerous. The alternative is probably something closer to UK Select Committees, being cross party but one that nominates its own chairman and spokesperson.
