Why is there even a charity of "Help for Heroes"? Why isn't the government providing this help for heaven's sake?

The reference to generations is part of an essential understanding what is going on in politics at the moment. I am sure that everyone is aware that the older generation were very pro Brexit but the younger generation were very much for Remain. I am 68.In my original posting I also forgot to mention the very important fire sale of the council housing stock by Thatcher. We then had the financial deregulation of the banks by Thatcher and Reagan which led to the banking crash of 2008 with a worldwide cost of bank failures of $20 trillion. The Labour government had to bail out numerous banks including RBS and LLoyds and of course we saw the collapse of Northern Rock. Some people have done very nicely out of the financial deregulation and we now have lots of buy to let millionaires. The downside is that we also have a massive national debt.

The alternative is that he has decided to renege of the draft EU withdrawal agreement. He will then blame the EU on reneging on the fantastic deal that he got and we will leave with a no-deal at the end of January. Unfortunately most of the public will believe him.

I would say its probably worse than presented. I am over retirement age but I can see that the younger generation have been and continue to be screwed unless they wake up and start taking an interest:1. Older generation had free university tuition.2. Older generation only had to take out a mortgage of 2.5 to 3 times salary for a house purchase.3. Older generation plundered the mutuals that had been built up by past generations and left nothing.4. The older generation sold off all of the public utilities and state owned industry.5. The UK has a massive national debt arising from the US sub prime housing crash which affected banks everywhere. Rather than tackle this, the older generation have been reducing taxes so that the problem is passed onto the next generation. The media would have you believe that Labour caused the US housing and worldwide financial crash. Crazy!

After almost 10 years of austerity and a tax cutting jolly which has taken UK debt up to £1.8 trillion this should have been a walk in the park for labour. Corbyn has been inept and in the debates with Johnson hadn't even bothered to prepare properly. I now fear for the economy, our Union and certainly feel sorry for the next generation who will have to pick up the pieces.

I agree with most of the objectives sought here but I don't recognise the picture painted of Starmer. I certainly don't see him as another Blair. The gulf between Starmer and the extreme right in power at present is vast and the main problem is not Starmer, it is the indoctrination of the public. That is where the real battleground is.

What representation? Only a minority of the electorate voted for the Tories and yet they have total control over Parliament. The majority have no political influence whatsoever. No wonder that the Scots want to take back control.

I agree we need PR. The problem that we have in the UK is that we have an indoctrinated electorate that think the Tories can do no wrong. The UK has about 62,000 more covid deaths than Germany, even though we have a smaller population and an island advantage. If the gutter press and media say that Johnson is doing a great job and Labour are a waste of space then the electorate will believe it. At the moment, Labour could come up with the most brilliant economic plan ever but it would be trashed in the media regardless of how good it was. Labour have to be careful and try not to look like fools. Over the next year or so Johnson and his cronies will get themselves into a bigger and bigger mess with the effects of Brexit and covid on the economy. Some of the public may then want change and perhaps will start to doubt the propaganda. I think Starmer has the right strategy.

I agree with much of this but I don't agree that there is an alternative to Starmer. I watch PMQs and Starmer makes Johnson look like a fool each week but Starmer has to be extremely careful. Huge swathes of the public have been indoctrinated by toxic poison in the gutter press and the press are just waiting for Starmer to give them more ammunition. The longer they are unable to get their teeth into Starmer and the public start to become disaffected with the Tories then Labour will have a chance, but the indoctrination of the public is severe so it won't be easy.

With increasing automation and robotics, UBI will be unavoidable in the future unless we want a civil war. UBI could be liberating for the population and ought to be embraced now.
