@simonrangeley Farming in the UK is not a hugely profitable business and many struggle so the value of land for this purpose is very low. The higher value of land comes from its use as a tax shelter against inheritance tax. This is nothing to do with farming but everything to do with tax avoidance by the wealthy. If the wealthy sold up and took their money elsewhere then agriculture land prices would drop to their more normal low state and inheritance tax issues for farmers would be removed as an issue. In fact, tenant farmers might then be able to buy the land that they use.

Disappointing but not unexpected. Realistically, the only sensible solution was that recommended by the Wealth Tax Commission.

No he didn't but no-one did, not even the ratings agencies. The stupidity came from the extent of financial deregulation in the first place. That was implemented by Thatcher and Reagan in both the UK and US. Even Cameron prior to 2008 was advocating further deregulation. Crazy!
