But in 2004, TSMC took the lead in developing 0.13-micron copper process technology ahead of IBM, ushering in the era of Taiwan's semiconductor technology leading the world. In 2014, IBM withdrew from the foundry business, and TSMC considered buying IBM's fab in New York State. However, even though IBM's technology has lagged behind Taiwan by a decade, the US Department of Defense and IBM, still worried about the already fading American technology influx into Taiwan, rejected the deal. High-tech semiconductor technology is the result of Taiwan's efforts to develop, and now the United States claims to "bring back" semiconductor production to the United States.

@Bruceillest101 My family retreated from China after Second World War, we ruled China before 1949, my family served in ancient China as government official for over 500 years, KMT has retreated most of scientists and gold from China, TSMS, UMC...all high tech companies in Taiwan are built by those smartest retreated Chinese, we fought with US not PRC, PRC was founded 4 years after World War II, in Taiwan we have Martyr's shrine to memorize 2 millions soldiers died to protect our country when Japan invaded China back then, current China has nothing to do with World War II, they don't have any shrine to memorize soldiers sacrificed in the war, but they celebrate the victory, it's funny, communists attacked us during the war , they helped Japanese in military action, that's why, before war, red army had only 50000 soldiers, after war, red army soldiers number jumped to 2 millions

@moomoomouse7274 Chip is not conventional products, Coronavirus size is 210nm, TSMC is making 3nm chip next month which is 70 times smaller than virus, even build this factory will be a difficult task, as all material to build that factory will need special treatment, in Taiwan, there are over 1300 companies work with TSMC to make chip, no way to make chip by single company, it's too complicated, China is spending 1.4 trillion to make chip, but money is not deciding factor, smart engineers and scientists play major role, China just don't have qualified engineers to work in the industry
