The right knows no limits to its ability to betray the ethical standards they profess to champion. The Trump admin is just the most corrupt and brazen incarnation. Watch the pieces on the church that Last Week Tonight did. Very funny and astonishing at the same time.

the op kingdom The problem is that you assume that your religion is true and has inherent worth so deserves to be a tax exempt organisation. The government cannot take a position on that (as you say, from the 1st Amendment). That means your church is to the state exactly like every other organisation that takes on money and redistributes it to its staff and acquires wealth itself - ie a corporation. If you want your church to be treated like a charity so it can go tax free, then open the books and demonstrate the portion of activities that qualify as genuinely charitable. Or you can register as a non-profit corporation and follow the rules that apply to those. Otherwise, sorry, but your organisation has to play by the same rules as everyone else. The tax system is grotesquely abuses by the church, often as demonstrated here, with a mere patina of actual religious belief. In any case, your particular belief in a supernatural being is not an excuse for society to give your organisation a pass on paying its taxes. “Secular” means no special treatment for any religion. That includes yours. Do you think atheist groups automatically get the same tax exempt status as churches?

Danny Knapp Sure but they don’t behave like regular non profits. That’s my point. As i said, if they register as non profits then then need to follow those rules, but they don’t. A clear example of the shenanigans around this is Ken Ham’s Ark Encounter while flipped from a for-profit to a non-profit to exploit tax advantages but it was not fulfilling the stricter requirements on non-profits regarding it hiring policies, expenditure and compensation rules etc so it’s now being sued.
