According to HS2's own analysis, it would be a net emitter of 1.451 million tonnes CO2 over 120 years - even accounting for car and plane journeys avoided. There never was an environmental case for HS2. In fact there never was a business case either.

  3.  scottglossop  hardly. The London Birmingham Manchester route is already electrified. In fact some of the £120 billion saved on HS2 can go to electrifying more of the network.

  4.  @anthonycollins9758  that is the expected price tag for the project. To be fair £30 billion has already been committed to the existing parts so let's be conservative and call it £90 billion saved.

  5. From an environmental and economic point of view, this is the right thing to do, less the road building. The figures on HS2 emissions vs avoided emissions were always absolutely horrible.
