Comments by "Michael RCH" (@michaelrch) on "Gun sales in United States highest since records began amid coronavirus" video.
The people most likely to get shot are people who own guns. And often they die at their own hands.

Meanwhile in the real world, most people are actually being pretty good about lockdown etc. https://youtu.be/VYubG-SthWs Funny watching this after watching Rutger Bergman explaining that people are actually good by default in general. It's a lie in our culture that people turn violent under pressure. The "thin veneer" vision of humanity is a construction of right wing propaganda. Elites look in the mirror and assume everyone is as selfish they are. But regular people generally aren't. As Rutger would say, the science shows that "Rousseau was right, not Hobbs".

Jon I'm sad to say it is. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence_in_the_United_States "In 2012, 64% of all gun-related deaths in the U.S. were suicides." Citation: https://www.issuelab.org/permalink/resource/20516 Also here https://lawcenter.giffords.org/facts/gun-violence-statistics/ Most deaths from shooting are suicides. It's really tragic.

And just to add, this study found that the odds of an assault victim being shot increased 4.5 times if they carried a gun, and the odds of them being killed increased 4.2 times. https://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/full/10.2105/AJPH.2008.143099 Owning and carrying guns makes you less safe, not more safe.

Jon They have looked at that as well. It's not good. A National Institutes of Health study found that for each time a gun is used for self-defense, there are 11 suicide attempts involving firearms, seven assaults or murders and four gun accidents. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1447915/ So the balance is really clear. Guns are not making people safer. They are making them much less safe. Which makes sense when you think about it. All other things being equal, having deadly weapons everywhere isn't generally going to make for a safer environment.
