@ladyofthecreek279 Humans have been putting CO2 into the atmosphere 10x faster than the events which caused the "great dying" when global heating killed 94% of terrestrial species 252 million years ago. Yes, putting 2,000,000,000,000 tons of CO2 in the atmosphere in a few decades has large consequences for a complex system like the climate.

@Pmtd1234 2 points though. 1. I said the rate of change is 10x faster now, not that the absolute concentration is 10x higher now. 2. The sun was significantly less powerful 252 million years ago. From memory, something like 5% less powerful. That means that the Earth was much cooler for the same concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere. Again from memory, the peak rise in temperature during the The Great Dying was 16C. We aren't likely to experience anything like that now, but the 4-5C that we are on course for by the end of the century will be more than enough to end our civilisation as we know it, along with millions of other species. It's not just the huge rise in temperature that's the problem. It's the fact that it is effectively taking place in one century. This is entirely unprecedented in the Earth's history and life has no chance to adapt, so much of it will disappear.

Renewables are CHEAPER than fossil fuels now. Why are you so keen to keep paying for more expensive energy, and to an industry that is making about $3,000,000,000 in profit every single day at your expense?
2
Does that include the leading scientists who worked for Exxon and Chevron in the 70s and 80s, and brought the climate impacts of their products to the attention of their bosses? And who were then fired...
2
Tom Harris is not a climate science expert. He is a lobbyist funded by the Heartland Institute, which gets its money from the fossil fuel industry. What he is arguing for will make energy more expensive and cause more deaths and illness due to air and water pollution.
1
You know we are already paying billions in taxes to subsidise the most profitable industry in history, right? That is the fossil fuel industry...

@CRB1971 to be fair, COVID killed over a million Americans...

@1Jason More powerful hurricanes with more rain, and which strengthen more quickly are predicted by climate science. A higher NUMBER of hurricanes is not, in fact we could get slightly fewer hurricanes because atmospheric shearing can stop smaller ones forming. So fewer 1s, 2s and 3s. More 4s and 5s. This is what we observe in the last 20 years.
1
@1Jason Which part? That the hurricanes are stronger on average now, or that the climate science predicts that they would be? What would convince you that I'm right?
1
@1Jason I agree that climate has changed before humans. No argument there. Do you agree that there are more cat 4 and 5 hurricanes now than in, say the mid 20th century? If not, what would convince you of that?
1
@1Jason I am not following. Sorry. I said that we are getting more, powerful hurricanes. You said that was BS. I just asked what would convince you that it wasn't BS. It was an honest question.

It's not about having a brain or not. It's about knowing how to tell science from misinformation. Harris is a lobbyist working for the fossil fuel industry. Not a scientist.

He isn't a scientist. He's a lobbyist.

@Pmtd1234 those volcanic events went on for many centuries. The EU and US are major emitters. The US is responsible for about 20% of the excess CO2 in the atmosphere today. The U.K. alone is responsible for about 5%. China is responsible for about 10% and its population is 4X that of the US and U.K. combined. Claiming that the rich countries can do nothing about this is clearly wrong. And it's also obvious from the numbers that they have the first duty to do something. If they don't then everyone loses. Including us. Also, saying that China is not acting is not correct. It has the largest solar, wind and EV markets in the world by far. It has completely eclipsed the US in all these areas, mainly because the US fossil fuel industry has actively blocked investment and development of these technologies in the U.S.

@Pmtd1234 I agree that China needs to stop building coal plants as well. But they already produce half the carbon emissions per capita vs the US and their share of historical emissions is about 1/0 per capita vs the USA. We all need to push for decarbonisation ASAP. I can't affect what happens in China so I fight for it at home. It's in my interest and that of my family (and I think yours as well) to do that. I hope you have a good one as well. 👍

@jghifiversveiws8729 which numbers specifically please? I have cited a lot of numbers...
