  1. Well done Ben. Justified caution. The US got nothing out of the “deal” yesterday. North Korea got a cease of military exercises by the US and SK. I do hope he does get something in due course, but so far, Trump is being far too credulous and far to soft on Kim. When asked “what if it doesn’t work?” Trump replied “who knows. I will probably come back in six months and make some excuses or something...”. Exactly. How revealing....

  2. Chillo56 He is supposed to be a master deal maker but he came out of this deal with his pockets picked. He got nothing from NK. Nothing at all. Kim got a huge summit, heaps of praise from Trump, a mountain of propaganda to take home and the suspension of defensive military exercises (a very big deal and which, btw, he gave away without even consulting SK!). He failed at the first challenge. Let’s hope the State Department can clean up after him. He doesn’t seem too concerned. He said to the press: “I may be wrong. I may stand before you in six months and say, ‘Hey, I was wrong’. I don’t know if I’ll ever admit that, but I’ll find some kind of an excuse.” Awesome. That fills me with hope. Also great to see him being so candid about planning to just make shit up if he needs to later.

  3. Freedomboy006 NK got something for nothing. Cancelling military exercises is not a minor thing. It is what keeps US and SK in a state of readiness to repel attacks, and NK has attacked SK territory dozens of times over the years. Plus the praise for a brutal dictator is completely inappropriate. Kim is banishing 3 generations of a family to the gulag for life if one of them is caught listening to the wrong radio station. He is truly awful. There is a middle ground between “little rocket man” and “really smart, really great guy” who “loves his people”. Hannity blaster Obama for even considering talking to Kim in 2013. Now giving him a huge summit, heaps of praise and a strategic concession in stopping “provocative war games” (aka defensive military exercises) is the greatest diplomacy in history. It’s bizarre to watch Trump supporters rationalise these dangerous mistakes over and over again. The man is fallible. He got this wrong. You don’t have to stop supporting him to accept this.

  5. kalzoa22 Those were his exact words. He was also complaining of lack of sleep. It’s actually a fact that lying takes quite a lot of mental energy (even for someone who bullshits constantly like Trump). I suspect he was tired and so he just didn’t have the energy to lie this time, so he told the truth and admitted that he would lie later... which was nice.

  6. weejams There is no stick. No one can preemptively invade NK without sacrificing about 250,000 civilians in Seoul alone. All the generals and military analysts know this. It’s not even a secret that the Pentagon has been telling every President for the last 50 years that it is just not a move that the US can make. So what should Trump do? He should avoid insulting the Kim regime, but he already did that. He should stop undermining the alliance with SK. But he already did that. He should stop undermining the NATO alliance. But he already did that. He should stop emboldening NK by giving Kim a huge propaganda victory totally for free. But he already did that, He should stop handing Russia and China geopolitical power by lauding their leaders and their repressive regimes and undermining the rule of law in the US. But he already did that. He should stop cow-towing to Kim by calling off defensive military exercises without even consulting SK. But, oh, he already did that, Note, that last one has a huge sting in the tail as well. When, after several months, it becomes clear that Kim is doing absolutely nothing to denuclearise (and remember, he has made no binding promises to do so whatsoever) and the US decides it wants to restart the exercises, THAT will be portrayed by NK as a highly provocative action by the US and SK. That will cause a whole new crisis. NK will go completely batshit crazy and stat firing missiles all over the place and detonating nukes. It will probably invade a few SK islands for good measure (it has done that many times before). AND IT WILL BE TRUMP’S FAULT FOR NEEDLESSLY STOPPING THE EXERCISES IN THE FIRST PLACE. Trump is an amateur who was completely unprepared and got completely played.
