Declining birth rates are the main reason small towns are dying Large cities have always had low birth rates and they were increasing in population (and still do today) due to people migrating from small towns and rural areas and the rural areas and small towns had high birth rates so the few excess people who leave don't cause the towns population to decrease However as birth rates are declining it's no longer sustainable for small towns to keep healthy demographics and the population is declining and most of people who stay are elderly causing the towns economies to even deteriorate more and faster alongside services and infrastructures causing even more flight especially among parents and young people feeding the vicious cycle more Migrants from other countries don't solve the problem as they prefer life in big cities and can't be good for rebuilding and fixing the towns and rural communities even if promised free housing
