  3. Your chromosomes define whether you are male or female. A fetus has both male and female reproductive organs until it reaches a stage when one set recedes. Sometimes that process doesn't go smoothly, and the baby can be born with vestigial organs of the opposite sex. That doesn't make it the opposite sex, it just means that the baby has a birth defect.
