Grown men didn't have the option of living with their parents until whenever, doing nothing, nor was it tolerated even for the rich. Girls were expected to get married early, run a household, care for the sick and injured with a certain medical expertise, raise a family, conduct business for the household, ad infinitum, and not burn the house down or let the children get burned while keeping an open fire going 24/7 (a common cause of childhood death back then, btw). Less complicated then? Not even remotely.

  315. I feel the same way. Our household income is over the poverty line, but people we know on welfare live better than we do. They have new cars, their rent is subsidized, the amount they receive in food stamps is eye-popping, free healthcare and vision care, they go to Vegas on vacation, etc. I haven't had a vacation since 2005. Our only car is 16 years old. Their apartments are nicer than our little house, which needs maintenance that we can't afford. But our taxes pays for their lives. What's the point?

Especially on a large scale, in practice, authoritarianism is authoritarianism. While either can exist successfully, on a minute scale, without an oppressive police state, human nature will bring out the worst in the leaders and, at the very least, underground rebellion among the population on a larger scale. When I read that Zelensky was charging hundreds of government officials with treason, including his childhood friends, I thought that he's fallen off the cliff, lost his marbles. Russia shouldn't have even considered selling gas or any products to the EU after the EU decided to send weapons and military to Ukraine. That's just nuts.
