@tamarchristians1201 Back in the 1700s, people were taking on adult responsibilities at 16, 17, 18 years old. Adolescence as a stage of life didn't exist. There was no social safety net; a lost reputation could ruin your business and a bad harvest or a hard winter could mean that you starved. If a man went to university, it was a serious education. Also, wars on American soil forced people to grow up fast. To say that life was more complicated then is an arrogant statement. Life was far more complex than it is for most Americans now. Grown men didn't have the option of living with their parents until whenever, doing nothing, nor was it tolerated even for the rich. Girls were expected to get married early, run a household, care for the sick and injured with a certain medical expertise, raise a family, conduct business for the household, ad infinitum, and not burn the house down or let the children get burned while keeping an open fire going 24/7 (a common cause of childhood death back then, btw). Less complicated then? Not even remotely.

You're kidding, right? Russia hasn't even begun to field the 200,000 reservists who just reported for duty. There are more reporting every day. And the goal of 300,000 is just 1% of Russia's reserve troops. If Ukraine fielded every man, woman, and child in Ukraine, they couldn't match the number of trained soldiers that Russia has in the reserves. In the meantime, Ukraine has none of their own weapons left. The EU is demilitarized after sending Ukraine everything they've got. The US is also tapped out; the weapons that Biden promised can't be delivered until 2024 because they aren't manufactured yet. The EU and the US don't have the capability of manufacturing weapons at the pace Ukraine demands. Meanwhile, Russia is manufacturing their own weapons because, unlike the modern west, they're highly industrialized and have factories and steel galore.

@n.r.2258 I don't give a rat's patootie what differences you think there are between socialism and communism that actually matter. Especially on a large scale, in practice, authoritarianism is authoritarianism. While either can exist successfully, on a minute scale, without an oppressive police state, human nature will bring out the worst in the leaders and, at the very least, underground rebellion among the population on a larger scale. I'm viscerally opposed to big government, no matter what political ideology, or combination of political ideologies, it espouses.
