  3. I agree with both points. As for the second, yes, Putin is playing the diplomat while Medvdev is laying out the truth of it without cushioning it.

  6. I don't see Putin or any of the Russian leadership accepting a defeat that final. If the war escalates to the point where the destruction of either Russia or the US is necessary to end it, then Russia will not go down. If they have to, they'll take us with them. That said, I think you're exaggerating the consequences of a Russian withdrawal at this point by a long shot.
