  1. Historian, here. Law enforcement has always been the strong arm of the government by definition. It has little to do with protecting the public, except as an occasional happy coincidence. You've been fooled by the 20th century PR campaign.

  2. And yes, I meant 20th century. Mid 20th century, actually. By the late 20th century, even the police had stopped pretending that they were there for our protection.

  3. The police don't deserve your trust. They are a necessary evil in the best of times, like all government. When you trust them, they feel free to be thugs with government power. Never trust; hold them accountable continually.
