  1. You could also demand (in writing) proof that you owe the debt. Most of the time, they've got nothing. Even if it isn't a collection agency, sometimes they're just fishing. My husband was in a hospital out of state on a business trip once; a couple of years later, they sent him a demand for payment (they had already been paid years ago). I had him write to them demanding proof that he owed the debt and we never heard from them again.
