It's his domestic policy that also made every factory dual purpose; they not only are capable of manufacturing military hardware, but every factory can switch to 100% military manufacturing in a matter of hours. Putin fortified Russia against sanctions by doing these things. Putin's foreign policies have also made Russia independent of the west by making and keeping allies in the east - where, by the way, the west farmed out most of their manufacturing. Thus the pickle that we in the west now find ourselves in.

  3. I agree. The professor doesn't understand modern Russia at all. He's making assumptions based on the USSR economic system, but modern Russia is far different. Your assessment of Putin tallies with mine. He's been slandered by the west to the point of the ridiculous, but the more extreme it gets, it seems the more people believe it. They call him a dictator and a communist, but what dictator signs into law the right of citizens to carry firearms almost everywhere in the country? What communist puts Bibles in every school and encourages the people to attend church and celebrate Holy Days?

  4. I agree that he's wrong. Russia began to industrialize heavily. They became capitalists. This something that the good professor doesn't understand. The modern Russian economy is capitalist. On top of that, every factory has the means to manufacture military hardware; each factory has the ability to switch over to 100% military manufacturing in a matter of hours.
