In many professions, you must move to a different company in order to move up. The upper management has the idea that they want to hire people from outside of their own company in order to gain fresh ideas and expertise. It isn't fair, and may not be true, but there we are. I was earning my Ph.D. with the idea that I would become a professor in my department eventually. My whole life was in that town. Then two years into my program, the university passed a regulation that they would never again hire faculty from graduates of our university, for the reasons I just stated. I quit the program and started a business, instead.
