  4. ​​ @hilaryb8807 People's expectations were much lower, too. The government's idea of acceptable living standards didn't even include electricity or a telephone. Even the very poor these days live like the small merchant class of the 1930s. In fact, probably better than the local butcher or grocer of the 1930s. I've seen people complain that they can't afford a house, but they turn up their noses at any house built before 2010 and doesn't have all the latest and greatest innovations. They could afford a house built in 1950 with old cupboards in the kitchen and old carpet, but that's not good enough for their highnesses.

  6. That's absurd. Either your idea of living with dignity is pretty majestic, or she insisted on living in a very expensive city. Either way, whose fault is that? Come on, my brother retired on a military pension and he wasn't hurting for money. He died a couple of years ago at 87.
