To be fair, the subject may not have been her choice. The head of the rural and agricultural history part of my history department forced his students to do their Ph.D. theses on weird, outlandish topics that were totally unrelated to their chosen field of study. One woman was forced to do her thesis on outhouses. He forced another student to do his thesis on mobile homes. The anger and frustration of the students were palpable.
