Actually that wasn't true. That pedo theory was put forward as fact by a homosexual professor, and it was shocking so it got a lot of support. But there are documented reasons why it can't be true, like the restriction of adult males during the exercise period for the boys. The boys were chaperoned by an older man whose job it was to keep out the adult men. Spartan society failed because their physical standards were so strict that they couldn't reproduce in sufficient numbers to maintain their gene pool, and their helots had no such problem.
