They're squatters. Who's going to report them missing?

That's what I was thinking. My now-husband helped me get rid of a squatting boyfriend by staying with me and sharpening his bowie knife in the living room.

I'm wondering why she hadn't secured the door.

@radagast7200 No, they don't. A lot of the really awful ones date back to the 1980s or 90s, and some date to around 2018 and later. Nice try. In Europe, squatter's rights laws date back as far as ancient Rome. Squatter's rights in the pioneer days referred to land pretty much exclusively, and not usually land that was already owned by a US citizen.

Bull. $10,000 is peanuts compared to even starting the eviction and lawsuit process.

You would think. However, you can lose your house to the squatter under the law. The thing is to get a real tenant to rent the house legally and move in. Their legal tenant rights, with legal paperwork, trumps squatters rights. Some big burly friend (or friends) with a massive dog or two might do the trick.

No, you get a friend to rent the house legitimately, even if it's only for a few bucks. That gives the friend legitimate tenant rights, which trumps squatters rights. Friend has the right to move in and has the paperwork to show the police. It's twisted, but it works.

No, legally rent your house to a friend or friends, even if it's just for a few bucks, and get them to move in. You can move in with them, but their tenant rights trumps squatters rights. You guys can make yourselves super obnoxious; clean your rifles in the living room, play loud music, get a couple of gigantic dogs. I got rid of a squatting ex bf by having my big, burly now-husband stay with me. He cleaned his bowie knife in the living room and my ex couldn't leave fast enough.

Which is illegal and could get you fined or jailed. However, it could be cheaper to pay the fine than go through the lengthy, expensive eviction process.

@theinsurance2450 If you squat in the home of a politician who doesn't live there for a big chunk of the year, it can be done. Say, one who is in Congress and lives in DC most of the time.
