Some wild animals are worth a small risk to befriend. YouTube is full of videos of humans and wildlife interacting peacefully. Foxes come to mind. Squirrels, chipmunks, various rodents and reptiles. Many people worry about diseases and that’s reasonable. In my case, about one in one hundred thousand have rabies.
I’m a skunk whisperer. People tell me that the risk is too great but I know the symptoms and the risks and they are manageable for me. Worst case, I get a painful bite and my insurance pays for a rabies vaccination. I can handle that easily.
In four years no skunk has ever even threatened to spray me or bite me. The worst thing any skunk has done to me is… step out of reach when I pet them. And that’s only been a few. Once a skunk pushed my hand away with her face when I tried to remove a foxtail from her cheek. At first I thought she tried to bite, but I looked at the video in slow motion and she just pushed. Males don’t generally feel comfortable being petted. They are not social like females. But go slowly, they recognize gentle grooming. Their mothers cleaned them and they feel that it’s safe. And it feels good. I even occasionally provide a light massage. I probably pet an average of ten wild skunks every night, weather permitting. Most seem to like it and I expect the rest will come around, as they have in the past.
But I must add that you should never touch a wild animal because it is stupid and reckless. I’m simply fortunate that I haven’t had any issues. Yet.
I’ve only ever met one species of skunk, the striped skunk, mephitis mephitis. For all I know a spotted skunk might spray a human on sight.
I had to leave a comment because what you said is pretty broad. Smart, no doubt. Safe.
I wasn’t looking for this hobby. I was lying on the grass when a skunk walked up and started sniffing my face. I didn’t move. I was beyond shocked. I believed the same nonsense that most people believe. But after she looked into my eyes and dug her nose into my mustache… I was instantly hooked on skunks. I can’t imagine life without them.
But don’t do what I do.
