  15. When we bought our house the entire outside was lawn. I immediately killed almost all of it and planted fruit trees and a vegetable garden. I enjoy mowing the small patch that's left, but I wish my wife would let me remove it too. It's for the dog who never uses it and it wastes water.

  35. I went from a white saucer cap as an Army MP to a campaign hat as a Drill Sergeant. Hats in the military are very important sources of pride and Esprit de corps.

  41. tenhirankei I was in the Army when Carter was elected. There was more than a little concern that the Soviet Union would test him. That's when I learned that the military can run an effective war (hot or cold) regardless of the president. With Cowardly Space Cadet Bone Spurs as our CinC that knowledge comforts me.

  45. I wore a white saucer MP cover on my head while wearing the Transportation Core patch on my sleeve at Ft Eustis, VA in the 1970s. TRADOC was the best duty for a young MP; street patrol, regular police work. One day I was ordered to take a report on a pretty large ship. I had no idea the Army had a Navy. It wouldn’t have been for me, I volunteered for the Army to keep my feet on solid ground.

  52. In the '70s I visited London and picked up a paperback in the train station. That evening in my room I tried to open the book. The pages needed to be cut. I had heard of this kind of paperback but I didn't think that they were still being produced. I didn't have a knife so I had to tear the pages.

Was tall and underweight to qualify for Army service but I had 3 years HS ROTC and I got my Congressman to tell whoever that it was a contract, I had fulfilled my obligation and it was too late to tell me no. I entered Basic Training as an E-3. In a baggy uniform. I mention that because wearing the steel pot made me look like a green mushroom. By the way, if you are skinny they make a terrible seat.

  63. I was stationed at Ft Eustis, VA 50 years ago when I took a tour of the James River Reserve Fleet. There were a Lot of big ships. I was amazed. Dozens of enormous ships. We passed close to them. I just looked it up and there are only six ships still there.
