  1. It not the same thing, but... When I was 14 years old I qualified Expert with the M-14, M-60 and the Small Bore Rifle (for the rifle team) in High School Army ROTC. I enlisted in the Army at 17 as an E-3 with a fully authorized Expert badge before I had been issued a uniform to pin my rank or badge on. ROTC graduates got the leadership positions in Basic Training and helps when you get to your permanent duty station. That was in the 1970s. I don't know if that's still an option for High School kids but I walked into the Army with complete familiarity ready to serve the USA. Even the ROTC students who didn't enlist entered the workplace with advanced leadership skills. Leadership skills that most people in the civilian world NEVER learn. High School ROTC was/ is a valuable asset for America. Most "RO" students didn't go into the military during my time, it was during the Viet Nam era. There was no obligation. I did. We all learned valuable life lessons. ROTC was the most valuable class for me personally in all of High School.
