  29. When I volunteered for the Army I was assigned to Ft Eustis, VA and put in First Patrol under Sergeant Mary S. She was a Black Woman from Florida who took her responsibilities very seriously. Only a couple years older than I, she taught me how to be a policeman. And she was a good friend. I would prefer an Article 15 to her giving me a disappointed look. She once had to put me in danger. It turned out fine and I considered it part of the job. But after, she put her hand on my chest and looked into my eyes. It was the first time I recognized the burden of command. All of us loved Unit 10. She inspired me to become a sergeant.
