  2. They don't DO anything. But the user's brain does, even if they know it's a placebo for some people... see homeopathy. That doesn't do anything but is a huge industry. When I was a nurse I had patients who insisted on continuing to use their placebos while in the hospital. Most doctors don't care because store bought homeopathic remedies are just filtered water. Magnetic stuff and crystals are very common. I find them under pillows while changing linens.
