I consider myself to be a better than average driver.
I was an Army and civilian cop. I’ve have participated in two driving courses. One was pursuit driving, that was fun. I was a traffic accident investigator. In more than half a century of driving I have been pulled over three times for speeding and received one, reduced, citation. I’ve never caused an accident. While driving I listen to nothing but Google Maps in one ear. No music. I have an oversized rear view mirror and convex stick-on mirrors on the outside mirrors. Nothing hangs from my rear view mirror. All of my windows and mirrors are clean and coated with RainX. My wipers are fresh. My tires have good tread. All of my vehicles fluids are topped off. All of the lights work. My vehicle has a trailer hookup so I added a step to protect the rear bumper. I leave a very large distance between the vehicle in front of me and my front bumper. Drivers constantly move in front of me because they can’t do the math. Changing lanes rarely makes sense and we’re all going the same speed anyway. I always use turn signals. I always let others go ahead of me. I back into my driveway so I’m safe crossing the sidewalk and entering the roadway. I share the road with motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians. I’m never in a hurry. If I’m late… I’m late. I don’t try to make up the time by driving faster. I never touch my phone while driving. Not even to see who’s calling. It can wait. I keep a few tools, a charged jumper battery plus a phone charging cable because it has a USB port. I keep charged, LED emergency flashers in case have to pull over in traffic and an amber flasher because I often stop to help on the road. I have AAA. I keep a well stocked first aid kit including Naloxone handy next to the fire extinguisher. My window breaker is in a tray within reach, held by mild wire so it won’t get lost in a violent collision. There’s nothing on the floor that can get under the pedals. Screw down mats. For me, driving without my seatbelt would be like driving blindfolded; it would be impossible. I must have side airbags. It’s the only way to survive being “T-Boned” in an intersection. I keep my tank full; fumes detonate, not the liquid. I have a textured, rubber grip on the steering wheel. I never carry a heavy object behind the driver’s seat. Anything that could harm a passenger in an accident must be transported safely. Car seats… obviously. Some are ridiculously complicated to operate properly but must be used exactly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
What have I missed? Being a traffic accident investigator you see all kinds of unexpected things. Bad things that could have been avoided but the odds were so low that it didn’t seem worth worrying about. I know that feeling, and I try to resist it. And I always try to be the friendliest driver you will encounter today.
