  1. I've been there three times. The first time in the 1960s when I got back to the rim the employee in the gift shop gave me a patch that said "Bottom of the Hole Award"... I think. The second time in 1974 (I think) we were not allowed to climb on the sides. The third time in the early 1980s there was a path you could follow, but no patches.
