  18. It would take a stupendous amount of military equipment for Ukraine to recapture Crimea or even most of the Donbas. The equipment required would run above a trillion dollar mark. That's just not something America is willing to commit to or spend. It's clear the best we can offer at this point is a stalemate. Which is exactly what we're seeing on the battlefield.

Were Russia a peaceful, benevolent neighbor, none of the former Eastern bloc countries would require security from elsewhere. Hence, former Eastern bloc nations are securing their own perimeters against the irrational and malign actor in the region. If Russia were concerned about NATO, they have a weird self fulfilling prophetic way of going about trying to deter it.

  34. Always overestimate your enemy and underestimate yourselves. This is a recipe for victory. The quantity of arms required for Ukraine to win(restore full territorial integrity including Crimea) would require over a trillion dollars in materiel and support. That's not something the US should commit to or can afford to commit to. At best we can offer a stalemate.

Secretary of defense did not state "this war was supposed to erode Russian military power" but rather that we will use the war Russia started to erode Russian military (so they think long and hard before engaging in expansionist behavior again). ie.
