I think a message is being sent to Russia. Taking out energy infrastructure is not that difficult. It is even easier on land. Russia now knows that all their pipelines carrying gas or oil can be put out of action relatively easily. As can their nuclear power stations. That would mean total economic collapse and facing a winter where their populace is far colder than people in the EU. As a bonus, any thoughts the Germans may have had to cut a deal with Russia have just gone out the window. A win-win move by someone as long as they don't get caught.
