@richdobbs6595 Reagan increased military spending to 6% of GDP. That put enormous pressure on the USSR to compete. They couldn't keep up. If NATO countries bit the bullet and did the same, Russia's territorial ambitions would turn to dust. Russia is far weaker than the USSR was prior to its disintegration.

@richdobbs6595 The USSR did need to keep up if they wanted to keep waging proxy wars and hold their country together. They failed. The USSR had 25%-30% of global GDP. Russia has about 1.5%. Putin is not just trying to stay in power. He is challenging the West, just like the USSR did. If not for that, I'd agree with you that staying in power would be easy for him. Although his ideological motivations are different, his goal of defeating the US/West is the same. He's doomed to failure.
