Could it be that Puting in his long rulership has gotten to the point where staff and people around him have told him more or less what he want to hear or what they think he wants to hear and thereby having been quite misinformed about both the Ukranian peoples acceptance of a possible Russian governance, the status of his military in general, etc. It seems quite weird that an otherwise pretty contained pragmatic leader, usually well aware of the global games behind the scenes etc. as Putin have been over the last decades would make such a huge mistake of wagin this war at a darn wrong time – even a sore simple thing as the terrain in this time of year is bad for ground vehicles in the region. Also I do not get it for anything else than the geo strategical concerns of Russia vs West in this whole region connecting Russia and Europe, thus the large natural gas and oil depots in Ukraine – which yes could turn a free ukraine into a direct competitor to Russias exports. If I am not mistaken Russia have created quite a lot of finansial growth over the last decade, lots of foreign investors into the Russian economy and a slight hope that wealth and health would improve in Russia leading to far less tensions between Russia and the West. Why Putin has chosen such a path as he has right now is beyond me, I simply dont get it because Urkaine can not be held if the majority of the population is against its ruler – Russia will simply not have enough manpower to control such a large region and so many people, thus at such a moment large parts of the infrastructure will be destroyed – so what is the gain?. Over a slightly longer-term (but now accelerated) Europe will become independent of natural gas and oil from Russia becasue of this war, so what would be left of natural gas and oil in Ukraine after a war might not have any significant value at that time.
Geo staretegicly I understand that Russia needs Krym and the two east regions, and that Putin wants to avoid having Nato breathing into his neck via Ukraine, but that should be about it in my eyes (and I apologize to the people that live in these areas for this view) but in the means of a larger stable Europe this is the only way I can see Russia getting out of this with Putin not escalating this war into total war, which would motst likely end Europe forever. (This dystopic thesis was prediceted by both Nostradamus and "the Blind Woman" amongts others of spiritual forseeing) – I just hope that they were all wrong and that this war can come to a quick and peacefull end as soon as possible.
