  1. Portugal is a poor country. No one wants to talk about that. It's a beautiful country, but it's poor. It's country that depended on slave labor for so long, that it never really developed a " real" industry. Foreigners with money might live well, but the Portuguese have only recently become a literate society. In 1975, 50% of Portuguese people were illiterate. Unfortunately, Portugal will always be a poor country.
