So, so many songs. Amazing Grace. My Girl. Shortnin' Bread. Tons of folk songs in many cultures, pop songs, classical music.

This specific scale—the pentatonic scale—is pretty universal. It comes very naturally. So, it doesn't take much to recreate it visually.

Well, I said pretty universal. China and Japan both have this scale as part of their history, and other countries have some version of it. But you're right, what we think sounds good can be very different in different countries.

I'd bet that much of the audience already knew something about the pentatonic scale. Maybe try it again, but ignore the melody he's singing simultaneously. "Music Learning Theory"is a well-researched, science-based music-learning method developed by Edwin Gordon. It parallels the natural language-learning process. Sound comes first. You simply listen—"acculturate"—you move, you repeat/echo, learn rote pieces on an instrument. Like language, reading and writing comes much later. It's proven to be quite successful. There's a new student/teacher book by Andy Mullen based in this method, called "The Literate Musician." Another good book is called "How Children Learn Music" by Eric Bluestine.
