I don't recall anyone ever assuming that about the Russians. American pundits have actually made a habit of denigrating their capabilities as compared to the USSR.

@johnassal5838 Sure, but they weren't, as the commenter tried to outright say, "invincible". Or anything remotely implied by that.

@johnassal5838 Well, yes, but I'm surprised those estimates were made at all. Russia's own military doctrine dictates that they'd need many times more men to successfully occupy and pacify a country as large as Ukraine. Meanwhile Russia's contingent force to Kiev and the surrounding regions was only a few hundred thousand. I don't know what led Western analysts to believe that Russia wanted to occupy. If they wanted that, they'd have deployed many more troops. I concede that they failed in toppling the government, which I believe was their actual goal. But to think that they'd steamroll Ukraine, who had 8 years of CIA-backed training and billions in funding? I think people are retroactively exaggerating perceptions of Russia's military strength as a propaganda piece in the information war.
