@MoraqVos Eh, at least our concrete blocks satisfy the basic human need for contact. Even if it objectively sucks more day-to-day, at least we still know our neighbors and don't need to drive everywhere

It's their insular culture. They don't have a sense of the speed at which things change outside of their country, so they feel no pressure to change. Turn on American news, it is exclusively about US issues. Maybe Europe, Russia, China, occasionally. But their dominant role in global politics, finance, culture (Hollywood) means that they don't have a practical reason to pay attention to anyone else because nobody can even affect them. The pride before the fall, I suppose

@christianmoore7932 But Siberian cities still have better bus and even metro services than New York. Maybe not as many stops because the cities are not as big, but the timeliness and cleanliness and design is better. No excuses for Americans. If we can do it with a tiny economy that they love to insult, so can they.

@jaz093 You think you'll be the only one who does that? There'll still be traffic and it'll still take longer than a train designed to go faster than a car. And... it's not happening yet. So for now enjoy your amazing car experience haha

@NotJustBikes I took a particular interest in this a few years ago, apparently (because I'm not rich) a Miele vacuum cleaner tends to be very quiet as far as the American market goes. Makes it a lot less stressful to vacuum. Or at least it would for me, since the constant, earblasting wail is the main barrier, for me, to actually doing it

@Zyo117 Eh. I think Canada can do it, at the very least, within the St. Lawrence river valley. If Russia can build the Trans-Siberian Railway through thousands of kilometres of relatively useless terrain, you can connect your largest cities. I understand that the Canadian shield makes development between the two coasts nearly impossible until technology can overcome Canada's geographical limits, but even within these, progress can be made. It's better than the current state now.

Couldn't figure out for the life of me why I hadn't subbed yet, but there you go! One more closer to 200K! I would love to see more traffic design videos and/or rants about differences between the US and the Netherlands! :) I feel like there are plenty of videos about more formalized topics, but more 'esoteric' topics, like how cultural perception can affect the literal landscape of a country, or how the suburbs shape the psychology/mindset of the people living it in, is special to channels like yours, with vast experience on both sides of the Atlantic. Keep it up!

@indenturedLemon Yep. Night and day in Europe, though I feel wiring up an older place (new light fixtures in a different area, outlets, ethernet plugs etc) is a much more expensive affair in a concrete house. Also, the need for a drill to install larger nails

@aaroncraftedgoldencalf What does his decision have to do with the alleged racism of wealthy, gated-community members? Even assuming he was racist, that wouldn't make him incapable of seeing it in others. And Nigeria, while going through a boom right now, is still saddled with ethno-religious violence, and the general proficiency of English there isn't as good as in the Netherlands. Not to mention the better job opportunities, uniquely Dutch bike infrastructure, better environmental regulations, are all non race-based reasons to move to the Netherlands.

Hey, just wanted to float a video idea! I originally posted it in Adam Something's comments, but realized that his urban planning content centers more around opinion-based critiques, and may not be the best platform to explore this specific topic I love your video about the extensive traffic-calming measures in the Netherlands, their preventative approach to city design, etc. That got me thinking, could you explore more... "exotic" forms of design philosophy? Thailand's system, with most people riding motorbikes, is best described imho as organized chaos-- with a lack of roads, everyone operates like an ant in a colony, communicating only to their immediate surroundings and "flowing" through the traffic. India has a similar system afaik, just with a more diverse range of vehicles (and cows). Germany's approach is also interesting (might have been your video? will update EDIT: It was a video by Kerleem, also in the Netherlands!) A holistic approach to making driving as clean and smooth as possible--- very hard driving test, ie barrier to entry only responsible people have the patience to pass, preventative approach to roads (unlike US) which keeps damage costs down in the long-term, and very, very strict RoE when on the road (always yield right to a faster car, or risk a slow and painful death!). Thoughts? Love all the videos!

@laurencefraser Actually, it didn't. It was poor management. Even Georgia, today a staunch Western-leaning country, was fighting on the side of the Whites and seeking to reunite the Empire for its own protection. Same with aristocrats of Ukraine and Central Asia. If the Tsar had implemented reforms on his own instead of being forced by the Duma (Parliament) to step down, there would have been a stronger sense of unity and more time to transition away from serfdom before Germany inevitably attacked.

@laurencefraser Anyway that's not the point. And just a reminder, Siberia is still part of Russia. I'd say it worked pretty well. In fact of another railway had been built by the Fergana Valley I think Russia today would be much larger and more cohesive.

@jaz093 That isn't an issue if your transport system is good enough. Most downtown subways in Europe and Asia have a new train coming every minute during peak hours, and 5-8 minutes MAX during slow hours. It's just the US that sucks at doing this, so dumb Americans everywhere else is run like their country is, too.

@visorij3374 Sure, but the Americans actually ran with it all the way home- they completely destroyed their own cities, and even 'Nazi/Stalinist' architecture placed huge emphasis on metros and communal transportation

@NotJustBikes Chicago in particular was the birthplace of modern segregationist and classist housing policies in the '70s, so it comes as no surprise that economic upward mobility is slowly being eroded.

@carlosdgutierrez6570 I can understand your point, but if you adopt trends and useful changes faster, then I would just say that you're not actually as insular as the US. How could you adopt them faster if Mexicans pay just as little attention as Estadounidenses? The answer is, there is a difference. I do agree that Manifest Destiny is big part of it, but I also think that's exactly the difference I was describing. Since Mexicans' history doesn't have such a strong colonization and destroying the Aztecs (mixing with them instead), you are more open to the idea that your actions can be wrong, and so open to new ideas in general. This is why Americans are uniquely insular. Canada has connection to the UK, Mexico has connection to Latin America. But USA? They, as you said, believe they are the best, the center of everything.
